What is the Young Worker Leadership Academy?
The YWLA is a fun, interactive, all-expense paid, 3-day
leadership training on workplace safety, rights, and
responsibilities. It introduces participants to service
strategies (policy, education, media), and provides a
forum for
youth to plan service learning projects for their schools
and communities to promote positive, safe employment for
youth.

What's New?
1. Six participants from last year's Academy in Anaheim
applied to be Youth Mentors and presenters at the Sacramento
and Los Angeles Academies. The Youth Mentors who participated
were:

2. Three days
3. Workplace Field Visits: Small groups of youth went
out "on location" to observe and interview their
peers in different work settings. The groups practiced
interviewing before going out and then reported back to
the whole group what they observed and learned.

The YWLA is sponsored by UCLA-LOSH, UC Berkeley LOHP,
and the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation
(CHSWC). The California Center for Civic Participation
(Sacramento) and the California Partnership for Young
Worker Health and Safety are key partners in planning,
implementing, and evaluating the Academy.

Six Projects:
The Se'e Savi team planned and
conducted a Saturday workshop for 15 youth on workplace
rights, safety, and health hazards, with a focus on agricultural
work;
The 49er ROP Team created a poster
and brochure on workplace safety that were distributed
through the 49er Regional Occupational Program (ROP);
The College Bound team conducted
a one-hour workshop, using a Power Point presentation
they developed, for 80 youth on workplace health and safety;
The CART team held a poster contest
in their school of 1200 students, and made a DVD
to promote it and show to the entire school;
The Incredibles created and designed
two new pamphlets: one on how to prevent
and deal with sexual harassment
in the workplace, and the other on preventing
physical injuries on the job. The pamphlets were being distributed at Youth
Works,
a local youth employment program;
The Manual Arts Peer Educators
developed a week-long campaign during lunch
(May 23-27, 2005) to promote Safe
Jobs for Youth Month. Over 200 students received information
and participated in raffle games.
