By the time you have finished reading about our program; one young person has been injured at work.

The Youth Project (YP) is one of several occupational safety and health projects of the UCLA- LOSH Program. Focused solely on youth issues, it is designed to address occupational-health problems that youth face. Components of the program include Young Worker Leadership Academy, Peer Education, Presentations, Professional Development workshop, research and public policy information. The Project staff is available to answer questions concerning youth rights on the job, child labor laws, what to do if a youth encounters health and safety problems at work, and how youth can become peer educators in the health and safety field

Our approach to empowering young people draws on a successful model in which high school and college students train other youth, organizations, and adults about workplace health and safety. The Peer Educators lead workshops and plan events to promote awareness and prevention of injuries and illnesses at work as well as being a source for important information and resources. This Peer Education approach builds leadership, effective public speaking, project planning skills, and a sense of responsibility toward actively improving health and safety of all workers. The Peer Educators L.E.A.D.S. by Learning, Energizing, And Doing Something!

The YP partners with high school educators, unions, worker advocacy centers, parents, and community-based organizations to address teen worker rights and social justice issues. High-school aged peer educators/leaders learn about worker and community rights and develop communication skills and problem-solving strategies that allow them to become actively involved in their communities to assure all workers become aware of U.S. workplace rights and protections. The Peer Educators plan presentations, town hall meetings, participate in community events such as Workers’ Memorial Day each year, and assist in professional development workshops for educators to practice hands-on utilization of Project resources. A member of the California Partnership for Young Workers’ Health and Safety and California Assembly Speaker’s Commission on Labor Education, the Project participates in the annual “May is Safe Jobs for Youth Month in California” campaign and advocates for a statewide labor relations educational curriculum that includes a workplace health and safety component.
