Safe Jobs for Youth Month (SJFYM) is an annual public awareness campaign observed throughout the month of May that helps communities implement strategies to create safe working environments for our teenage workers.

Having a job as a teenager can be great. Young workers earn money, learn responsibility, and get new skills. But is the work safe? Have they been trained? Do they know what to do if there is a problem?

Resources

  • YoungWorkers.org educates young workers and their employers, parents and teachers on teen safety in the workplace. You can download a Safe Jobs for Youth Month Resource Kit (teaching activity, community service suggestions, the winning poster, tips for parents, and more).
  • Facts for Employers: a fact sheet outlining all the measures you can take to keep all your teenage employees safe. (PDF)

Public Service Announcements

  • California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) has created Public Service Announcements in seven languages regarding health, safety, and employment information. The PSAs can easily be downloaded. Radio stations throughout the state play these PSAs to raise awareness among teens, parents, educators and other government agencies about workplace safety resources.
