Core Curriculum and Learning Objectives
Completion of the core curriculum and a minimum of three supplemental modules is required for certification as a WOSH Specialist.
At the end of each module, participants will be able to understand and perform a number of activities as outlined below.
Module 1: Promoting Effective Safety Programs
Total time: 3 hours
- Describe the purpose of the WOSHTEP core training program and the leadership roles and responsibilities of a WOSH Specialist.
- Explain the impact of injuries and illnesses on the job and the benefits of prevention efforts.
- Describe the multiple factors that contribute to injuries and illnesses, including work organization, work environment, and human behavior.
- Demonstrate an ability to analyze root causes of workplace injuries and illnesses and recognize underlying systems and structures that contribute to a health and safety problem.
- Describe the elements of a comprehensive and effective injury and illness prevention program.
Module 2: Identifying Hazards in the Workplace
Total time: 2 hours
- Identify the range of hazards that may be found in a workplace.
- Describe at least five methods for gathering information about job hazards.
- List the strengths and weaknesses of three investigative methods.
- Identify at least three resources that can be used for assistance in investigating health and safety problems.
Module 3: Controlling Hazards in the Workplace
Total time: 2 hours
- State at least three issues to consider when prioritizing a health and safety problem to work on.
- Help prioritize health and safety problems to be addressed in their own workplaces.
- Describe a variety of options that may be available to address health and safety hazards at work and assess the advantages and disadvantages of different control methods.
- Identify specific controls for several common hazards.
Module 4: Health and Safety Rights and Responsibilities
Total time: 2 hours
- Describe the key regulations that govern workplace health and safety.
- Explain how health and safety standards are established and enforced.
- Explain employee and employer rights and responsibilities under Cal/OSHA regulations and the California Labor Code.
- Provide assistance identifying and complying with key health and safety regulations relevant to their workplace.
- Access Cal/OSHA's programs that provide assistance and information about occupational safety and health.
- Identify key legal protections workers have when taking action on health and safety issues.
Module 5: Workers' Compensation and Return-to-Work Programs
Total time: 2 hours
- Describe the key elements of a workplace program that will address the needs of injured workers and promote their successful return to work.
- Explain the four kinds of benefits offered by the workers' compensation system.
- Identify useful workers' compensation information and assistance resources.
- Discuss strategies for controlling workers' compensation costs, with an emphasis on injury prevention efforts.
Module 6: Taking Action
Total time: 3 hours
- Describe the strategies and resources they will use to promote injury and illness prevention efforts in their workplace.
- Select, evaluate, and prioritize health and safety issues to address in the workplace.
- Develop effective health and safety recommendations and communicate them clearly.
- Discuss various ways to support change at the worksite as a WOSH Specialist, including at the individual, group, union, and joint labor-management team levels.
- State specifically how they will apply their new skills as WOSH Specialists, including first steps they will take.
