Question:
I know I'm required to have training, but which course do I need to take?

Answer:
Federal OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.120 requires that:

  • On-site hazardous waste workers receive 24 or 40 hours of initial off-site instruction;

  • Hazardous waste workers at treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities receive 24 hours of training;

  • Emergency response personnel receive 8 to 40 hours of training;

  • Workers receive 8 hour annual refresher courses;

  • On-site supervisors receive 24 or 40 hours of basic training plus 8 additional hours of specialized training.

    California Assembly Bill 1549 requires that hazardous waste haulers receive 16 hours of training.

  • Question:
    Why were HAZWOPER courses created?

    Answer:
    HAZWOPER courses are designed for those who need training and certification to work at a hazardous waste site (CERCLA, RCRA or state or local government sites) or who are involved in an emergency response to a hazardous waste or hazardous materials release such as: leaks, spills, accidents or fires. Examples of those who need certification are: environmental scientists, chemists, engineers, technicians, equipment operators, project managers, fire fighters, etc. These courses include: (1) the 40-hour HAZWOPER that is designed for those workers who regularly engage in hazardous waste operations; (2) the 24 hour HAZWOPER that is designed for those workers who regularly or occasionally participate in activities involving hazardous waste but are not expected to be exposed to levels above permissible exposure/published limits; (3) the 8 hour annual refresher course is for those who have completed the 24 or 40 hour courses.

    Question:
    Where do you perform your Hazardous Waste Training Classes?

    Answer:
    Thanks to Local 501 Operating Engineers' generosity and cooperation, our classes are held at their Downtown Training Center.
